ABSTRACT:
This article analyzes the structural challenges faced by Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from a strategic management perspective. It focuses on three critical aspects: the gap between entrepreneurship and professional management, the key performance variables (financing, human capital, technology and innovation, and organizational culture), and the widespread deficit in strategic thinking. Drawing from recent scholarly literature and empirical studies, the article argues that the sustainability of SMEs cannot rely solely on external factors or public support but must emerge from an internal transformation rooted in professionalization, formal planning, and the overcoming of systemic improvisation. The findings suggest that without a clear strategic vision and the use of analytical tools, Mexican SMEs will remain trapped in cycles of vulnerability and low competitiveness.
