The Growth Paradox and Structural Limitations of Mexican SMEs: A View from Nuevo León.

ABSTRACT:
This article explores the growth paradox of Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are highly prevalent yet structurally fragile. Drawing on recent data from INEGI, the Ministry of Economy, and specialized research, the study shows how these enterprises —despite generating over 70% of formal employment and representing 99.8% of the business fabric— largely operate under conditions of informality, limited strategic planning, and insufficient professionalization. The analysis focuses on the state of Nuevo León, where the pressure of a highly competitive ecosystem further exposes the internal weaknesses of local SMEs. The article argues that the main challenge lies not in their numerical proliferation but in their structural transformation, calling for coordinated public policies, resilient organizational frameworks, and an adaptive business culture.
